About our club
We are part of Toastmasters International, a global organisation that helps people to develop their communication and leadership skills. Our club has been running since 1998 and we're a small group from all walks of life, from students in their 20s to professionals and retirees.
You are welcome to come along to a meeting and see what we do. There's no pressure to give a speech. Guests are invited to stand up and introduce themselves, but it's entirely up to you.
Toastmasters is great for personal and professional growth. By learning to effectively express your ideas, you’ll be more persuasive and confident when giving presentations and also in your daily life.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions (click 'Contact us' on the left of this page), or come to a meeting and learn how Toastmasters and our club can help you.
What happens at a meeting?
A Toastmasters meeting includes various roles to help members develop their leadership skills. The roles are rotated for variety and to give everyone an opportunity to learn. New members are given the simpler roles first, such as recording the times of the speeches.
Each meeting begins with a welcome from the Chairperson. There will usually be 3-4 prepared speeches on the night, as well as spontaneous, 1-2 minute 'Table Topic' speeches. Supportive and constructive feedback is given on every speech and is tailored to the level of the speaker.
The structure of a meeting is semi-formal and all speakers are given time limits to make sure that everything runs smoothly. There is a short tea break about halfway through the meeting.
As a visitor, at some point in the evening you'll be welcomed and invited to introduce yourself. There is no obligation to speak, but most people take the opportunity to talk for about a minute in front of the group. We've all been first-timers, so it's a very supportive environment!
How much does it cost?
You are welcome to attend two meetings free of charge to learn how it all works.
If you decide to become a member, there is a one-off joining fee (NZ$30) to register with Toastmasters International.
Our ongoing membership fee is NZ$100 for every six months. This cost helps to cover the room hire for our meetings as well as our fees to Toastmasters International, which gives you access to the Pathways educational programme and a copy of Toastmasters Magazine.
The Pathways programme is an online tool for members that helps you to reach your goals, whether personal or professional. When you join Toastmasters, you choose your own goals and you're given a tailored, step-by-step programme to work through at your own pace.
You must be 18 years or over to join a Toastmasters club.
